Tristram Stuart is certainly tackling food waste head on with his project Toast Ale. Created in 2015, Toast Ale is more than just a creative idea and product; it’s a movement, a trigger for action, a shining light on the problem that is food waste. And it’s a BIG problem.
Around 24 million slices of bread are wasted every day; that’s 900,000 tonnes a year. Bread is right at the top of the list of worst offenders for food waste and it’s easy to see why. Bakeries throw away unsold and surplus loaves, supermarkets chuck bread that is past its sell-by date and sandwich makers ditch those end slices that no one ever really knows what to do with. Well, Tristram knows – make beer with them of course!
Yep, Toast Ale uses fresh bread that would otherwise be thrown away and turns it into beer; one slice per bottle to be precise. The bread is toasted, turned into breadcrumbs and brewed with malted barley, hops, yeast and water to make a distinctively delicious ale – think malty American Pale Ale with hints of caramel.
All profits go to Feedback, an environmental charity with the ambition to halve food waste by 2055. You can contribute to the cause by freezing your leftover bread or try your hand at some Toast Ale yourself!
