Rubies in the Rubble

Rubies In The Rubble

Love food, hate waste? So do Rubies in the Rubble: a condiments brand with a twist.

Did you know that food is often rejected by supermarkets for not looking the part? Good quality, edible, nothing-wrong-with-it food, thrown away just for not being as aesthetically pleasing as its perfectly round tomato buddies. This is the wrong message on so many levels!

Whatever happened to ‘it’s what’s on the inside that counts’ ay?! It’s equally as appalling to learn that if we reduced the amount of this ‘ugly’ food that doesn’t reach the plate by just a quarter, there would be enough food to feed everybody on the planet. Let that sink in for a moment. 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted every year, yet in 2017, starvation is still an issue.

Rescuing Wonky Fruit and Veg

Rest assured there are people who care.Rubies in the Rubble is doing its bit and inspiring people along the way. Founded in 2011, Rubies is dedicated to making exceptionally tasty food whilst bringing attention to the amount of perfectly good food that is wasted in the UK every year. All their rejected wonky fruit and veg is rescued from the bin and warmly welcomed in jars of delicious pickles, relishes and sauces. Even farmers’ surplus produce is thrown in the pot, and transformed into Smokey Chipotle Ketchup and Pink Onion and Chilli Relish. There has never been a more practical (or delicious) solution to food waste!

The message is strong and universal: imperfections do not define worth. We must preserve our food; preserve our planet, and find those rubies in the rubble. It’s really an added bonus that the products are scrumptious.

You can find Rubies in the Rubble products at Borough Market every Saturday as well as in EAT, Fortnum and Mason, Waitrose and Ocado.
