For the Time- and Energy-Starved

For those constantly on the go, a sugary cereal bar sometimes feels like all we’ve got time for. But while it may be quick and easy, most convenience food is sorely lacking in the health and nutrition department.

One company is looking to change that. Created by clinical dietitian, James Collier, Huel promises a “nutritionally complete powdered food” that is as good for you as it is convenient. Simply add five parts water to one part Huel, blend, and hey presto – a quick and healthy meal in a glass.

Sceptical? Here’s the nutritional breakdown. High in protein and fibre as well as containing all 26 essential vitamins and minerals. Huel meets the Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) for all macro- and micronutrients. Energy is obtained from nutrients in a ratio of 37% carbohydrates to 30% fats to 30% proteins to 3% fibre (if you’re interested in that kind of thing), providing optimum sustained energy release. The bulk of these macronutrients are derived from four primary ingredients – oats, pea protein, flaxseed, and brown rice protein.

Which is all well and good on paper, but does it taste like soggy cardboard? Not at all. First you can pick whether you want an unflavoured/unsweetened or vanilla variety, either of which is available gluten-free. Next you can choose from one of Huel’s nine naturally flavoured sweeteners such as strawberry or mocha. The flavour packs can be purchased separately and used to add some variety to your mix.

Convenience Without Compromise

Sure, you might get bored if you lived off the stuff, but for a quick breakfast or at the end of a long day when you can’t be bothered cooking, it’s a pretty satisfying option.

For variety, grab one of Huel’s 250-calorie energy bars. The bars are vegan, gluten-free and contain a balanced formula of protein, essential fats, and carbs, plus all of the vitamins and minerals you need. Starting at £45 for two bags of powdered Huel, it’s not cheap. But if you consider that gets you 28 meals, it’s not so bad.

Huel is a healthy, convenient way to eat that anyone can use to energise and streamline their day. For adults it can work as a primary nutritional source (if you don’t mind a bit of repetition) or a snack. For any veg-dodging kids or teens, it can be added to smoothies or pancakes to top up their intake of vitamins and minerals.

The entire line of Huel products is available online.
