G for Grow Your Own

Almost half of the fruit and vegetables grown for human consumption ends up in the bin for a one reason or another. When we throw away food, we don’t just waste important resources and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, we also waste a huge amount of money from our household budget.

One great way to ease this problem is to growing your own food at home. Growing your own food helps you to appreciate and respect your food more, which in turn will hopefully help you reduce food waste, save you money, and encourage you to eat more healthy, fresh food.

Growing food is achievable in any type of residence, no matter if you have a garden or not. It’s possible to grow food in a community garden, on a rooftop, on a balcony or simply on your windowsill. Easy vegetables to grow include greens such as kale and spinach, green onions, mushrooms, and beetroot, as well as fruits such as strawberries and herbs like mint and chives.

To grow your own food at home you can grow from seeds, using vegetable scraps like cores and stems, or with special kits from garden centres or online. Why not experiment and let us know how you get on?
